Review by Darren Dalglish
26th Oct 96

A farce written by Michael Cooney, the son of the famous Ray Cooney. This is his first farce, and what a good job he's done.

Eric Swan lost his job two years ago, but was scared to tell his wife, so until he was able to find another job he decided to swindle the Depart of Health and Social security by claiming benefit for fictitious people who he claimed lived at his house. However when an DHSS officer arrives at the house, Swan has to do some clever manoeuvring to avoid getting caught.

This is a cleverly written farce by Michael and skilfully directed by Ray, his farther . It really is a farce in every sense of the word. Some of the scenes are quite stupid and silly, but it is carried off very well by a wonderful cast which includes Bradley Walsh as Eric Swan , Nick Wilton as Norman Bassett, Frank Thornton( of the TV series Are You Being Served) as Mr Jenkins and Brian Murphy ( of the Tv series George and Mildred) as Uncle George .

There are many comic scenes which had the audience almost hysterical at times. In one scene Swan thought this old battle axe from the DHSS was his friend dressed up as a woman. So he insulted her and fondled her breasts. This was a very funny scene, so funny I thought a man next to me was going to have a heart attack as he laughed uncontrollably.

There are many farces that are better than this, but it is competent and it is a pleasant 2 hours in which to pass the day. Well worth seeing.
