The Devil is an Ass
Barbican Pit
(24th April 96 - 27th Aug 96)

Review by Darren Dalglish
29th May 96

The devil comes to earth and lives as a man for a day. However he gets himself in to a lot of trouble and discovers how evil humans are, so he wishes he was back in hell.

This story was a good idea by Ben Jonson, but it never achieves the desired effect. Matthew Warchus the director tried but failed to make this comedy entertaining. The story was just not strong enough.

John Dougall as Pug the devil, was unconvincing. Probably because the character "Pug" was not used enough, he just wasn't funny and he should have been! John Nettles in the role of "Merecraft" was superb and so was David Troughton as "Fitzdottrel". The best part of the play though was the sets, they wonderfully created the right atmosphere with graveyards, bones hanging down, fluorescent light and scary music.
