Return to previous page Don Juan in Soho Donmar Warehouse
(6 Dec 2006 to 10 Feb 2007)

Genre: Drama
Opened 6 Dec 2006
Written: Patrick Marber, after Moliere
Directed: Michael Grandage
Cast: Rhys Ifans (Don Juan)
Synopsis:Moliere’s farcical, tragic, anarchic original of 1665 is relocated to modern day Soho: swank, new hotels and festering, old clip joints, crackheads in alleys and cokeheads in clubs. The destitute, the delirious, the broken and the brazen, the hustlers and hoorays, the media movers and merciless whores - all packed in to one seething square mile. Don Juan - the infamous amoral hedonist in a society entranced by sensation.
What the critics had to say.....
NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Patrick Marber has fashioned a ravishing, thoroughly modern make-over for the worst sex-addict in theatrical history, Moleière's Don Juan. The humour and witty invective is imaginatively cruel, even sufficient to pleasure practising sadists. " ALICE JONES for THE INDEPENDENT says, "The writing is taut and sharp and Michael Grandage's production is slick with a variously-lit back curtain providing quick location changes and a frantic soundtrack conjuring up the nocturnal city...Don Juan in Soho is not flawless, but with Marber's razor-sharp wit and Ifans' whirlwind performance there is surely no better adult (in both senses of the word) Christmas show on the circuit. " MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "While Marber's entertaining version offers a far more radical rewrite, it lacks the subversiveness of Molière's original." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "Savagely funny, disturbingly dark and disgracefully sexy. BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "I enjoyed Marber’s Don Juan."
