The Painter of Dishonour
Barbican Pit
(21st May 96 - 31st Aug 96)

Review by Darren Dalglish
21st May 96

Serafina, played by Sara Mair-Thomas, marries a painter Don Juan Roca, played by John Carlisle, after her lover is thought dead at sea. However the lover returns alive and well, but Serafina's honour will not permit her to leave her husband for her lover and wants nothing to do with him, but he still persists in trying to win her back . To add to the plot Sarafina has another admirer in The Prince of Ursino.

What we have here is a very fast paced drama as it switches from one location to another. But, it is easy to follow and full of intrigue, plotting and infatuation.

The sets are basic, but that is all that is needed in this well written play which is directed wonderfully by Laurence Boswell. The acting as always with the RSC is of the highest standard, particularly by John Carlisle and Sara Mair-Thomas.
