Tolstoy
Aldwych Theatre
(30th April 96 - 18th May 96)

Review by Darren Dalglish
14th May 96

This play has been panned by the critics thus resulting in the production closing within 3 weeks of opening. This is a shame because I thought it was quite good. It is about the relationship of Count Leo Nikolaevich Tolstoy played by F Murray Abraham and his wife played by Gemma Jones.

The sets are very effective in getting the right atmosphere and the acting is of the highest quality. It is not necessarily the story that made this play good, but the way the characters were explored, they were very believable.

The theatre was nearly empty, which is why it's closing! I think a lot of people have missed a good play which is sad considering some of the bad plays in the West End at the moment playing to full houses.

This is a good production that does not deserve to close so soon, but I guess I am in the minority again!!
