July 2001

The show has recived moderate notices from the popular press.... PATRICK MARMION for THE EVENING STANDARD says, “The ideal audience for this fantastically antiquated musical is probably under eight and over 80 - early and late childhood.” JEREMY AUSTIN for THE STAGE says, “Loesser’s first complete Broadway score…has not stood the test of time.” FIONA MOUNTFORD for TIME OUT says, “This slight, sweetly engaging musical…is ideal entertainment for a summer evening.” DOMINIC CAVENDISH for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, “Talbot's perky, well-sung but not always polished production doesn't hide the musical's deficiencies, but it strives hard to keep us gently entertained, and largely succeeds” MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, “ It's an infectiously enjoyable show, even if not one of the greater Loessers.” RHODA KOENIG for THE INDEPENDENT says, “Charm, but no chutzpah”, and goes on to say, “The show's faults, however, are made much more tolerable by the luscious Regent's Park setting, and are worth toleration for the chance to see this sweet, clever musical..” THE SUNDAY TIMES says, "Cameron Blakely carries the production by making absolutely no change in his performance whether he is dressed as Charley or his aunt." SHERIDAN MORLEY for TELETEXT says, "Ian Talbot's new production in Regent's Park is lively enough, but desperately undercast."
